Poker is a card game that requires both luck and skill to win. However, over time, the application of skill will greatly reduce the variance of luck. The best players know how to predict their opponents’ hands and make decisions that maximize their profits. This is called “reading the game.”

After all players have received their 2 hole cards, there will be a round of betting that starts with the player to the left of the dealer. The player may raise their stake at any point during the hand. If a player cannot raise higher than the last raiser, they must call the bet or fold.

A fifth and final card is then dealt face up, this is the river. There is one more round of betting before the showdown where all cards are revealed. The player with the best 5 card poker hand wins the pot containing all bets made at each stage of the betting.

The exact origins of the game are unknown. It is thought to have evolved from a number of different vying games, including: Belle (French, 17th – 18th centuries), Flux and Post (German, 17th – 18th centuries), Brag (18th century), and Bouillotte (French, late 18th – 19th century). The current game of poker first appeared in America around 1900, using the full 52-card English deck, and spreading quickly. R F Foster compiled a list of the rules of poker in 1904. There were a number of further American developments such as draw and stud poker during this period.
