Prior to this, gamblers would meet in private clubs known as ridotti. These clubs were not necessarily located in a casino and could be either legal or illegal.

In addition, some offer traditional Far Eastern games such as sic bo, fan-tan and pai gow, or local games such as two-up in Australia, banca francesa in Portugal and boule in France.
