Lottery is a fixture in American life, and it raises millions of dollars for state budgets. The money people spend on these games is not without cost, however, and it\u2019s worth considering what those costs are.<\/p>\n
While there\u2019s certainly an inextricable human impulse to gamble, the real issue with lotteries is that they dangle the promise of instant riches in an age of inequality and limited social mobility. Moreover, they disproportionately affect the very poor, who don\u2019t have enough discretionary income to spend that much on tickets.
